Movie Review by Tony
April 7th, 2006

"Mean Girls" is the kind of movie where you walk in and really have no idea whatsoever what to expect. You have a screenplay written by SNL's Tina Fey, with help from a book that was written. You have Lindsay Lohan, who is easy on the eyes for the male race, and perhaps even the female race if that is your bag of tea. Plus, you have teen movies which can sometimes insult your intelligence and not say much for the teenagers of the world.

But this time, you get wickedly funny, accurate, and comical portray of the high school world. High school has really been portrayed this way before or in this fashion. It takes characters who we all have seen or have known in high school and turns them into over the top characters who are funny and don't even know it.

You have the hottie bo bottie's called the Plastics, which includes Gretchen Wieners (Lacey Chabert), Karen Smith (Amanda Seyfried), and Regina George (Rachel McAdams). Regina is the queen bee .. hott, cruel, and knows it. Karen is the dumb follower who probably can't spell her name. You have Gretchen who is the follower and second fiddle to Regina.

Amanda Seyfried , Lindsay Lohan and Lacey Chabert in Paramount's Mean Girls

Lindsay Lohan plays Cady Heron who is new from Africa and never been in a real high school world before. She has always been home schooled. When she enters high school, she is taken into the Plastics world. She also encounters Damian and Janis Ian, one is gay and the other is rumored to be a lesbian. The teacher involved is Tina Fey and the principal is Tim Meadows.

I wish when I was in High School, I had girls who looked like Lohan, McAdams, Chabert and teachers who looked like Tina Fey, but hey, we all can dream can't we?

The movie then takes us down a somewhat familiar road, but not without a lot of laughs along the way. The reason this movie works and works as well as it does is because we all have been through high school and seen these types of characters before. Relateable humor is one of the best kind of humors in my eyes.

We have this normal high school environment with abnormal characters and the characters don't know they are funny. They are being themselves. The movie also tackles some tough high school issues, but does it in a comical way that can reach out to students without coming off preachy or as a moral history lesson.

Tina Fey , writer and star of Paramount's Mean Girls

This was one of my favorite films of 2004 for it's comical and witty writing. Lots of SNL characters arrive and this movie feels like a well written 2 hour Saturday Night Live sketch. If you have not done so yet, check out "Mean Girls."
