First-time director Estes makes a superb debut with this quiet, unsettling, and ultimately disturbing exploration of adolescent cruelty. The small, quiet moments build tension even more so than the powerful sequences of verbal battery; the young actors, especially Rory Culkin and Carly Schroeder, are absolutely fantastic. A different, darker, yet more realistic kind of coming-of-age movie.
