Quest for the Holy Burger

This is one of those movies that never gets the credit it deserves.

Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle is about, believe it or not, Harold and Kumar (John Cho and Kal Penn) going to White Castle. The two stoners (in a realistic and fair depiction of weed smokers) inevitably run afoul of every plight known to man (and some unknown) in their munchie-motivated quest for Castle's little square burgers.

H&K is a type movie that, like the fast food burger, has been produced by many different people with the use of various byproducts often resulting in filling space while lacking any nutritional value. H&K, however, separates from the herd by laying a foundation in truth. While the situations that our two intrepid heroes find themselves in are often as impossible as they are ridiculous, what's funny isn't the situations but the subtext and social commentary.

H&K takes turns poking fun at various subjects, including itself, which is where the true genius of all humor lies, while sincerely humorous cameos from Anthony Anderson and Ryan Reynolds certainly help. And when did Doogie Howser (Neil Patrick Harris playing himself as a child star gone bad) get so damn funny?

Anytime someone tells you that such and such movie was the "funniest ever" you should be wary, but in the case of Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle it's not such a wild boast. In the thinned gene pool of low-budget comedies, Harold and Kumar proves to be the peak of evolution.
