Girl with a Pearl Earring (2004)

The Girl you should see.
The "Girl with a the Pearl Earring" is actually one of those films that I enjoy the more I see it. There is not an aspect to this movie that wasn't well thought out. From the storyline, to the acting, to the sets, the musical score, or the cinematography.
It's hard to capture the mood of the film without having some reference point. But if you've ever seen the film "Remains of the Day" or read the book and felt that overwhelming since of the servants having to be so restrained and reserved then will get the mindset of these characters and the world they inhabit.
The movie stars Scarlett Johanssen as Grit, a servant girl who starts working for the painter Johannes Vermeers played by Colin Firth and his family. Johannes is a somewhat mysterious figure who seems alone in a house full of strange people. And his family doesn't really treat him as if they know him that well either.
The characters lives and interactions with each other are at times like a little dance. The slightest gesture or movement or look here and there can mean so much in their world. There is a scene between Colin Firth and Scarlett Johanssen when they are making paints together and their back of their hands touch for a few seconds but you know and they know that the length of that touch to them amounts to a kiss.
The other unspoken thing between Grit and Vermeers is that Grit seems to have a knack for painting. It's clear that he values her instincts and feelings about his own work above anyone else's.
It is also another thing to get the mood of the artistry it took make this film look so gorgeous and lush. There are scenes in this film that mimic many classic paintings in history (Vermeers of coarse being the most obvious). The time and effort it took to pull this of I can only imagine.
This is a film that is defiantly worth seeing.
