It Was Actually Pretty Good!
I always love to see remakes. Bad or good. Its just fun to watch newer age directors try to spin around an older age film. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a remake from Tobe Hoopers classic of the same title. This remake is actually freaky, got some gore and it had some work put into it.
In 1974, a group of college kids are headed to Dallas through the back roads of Texas. On the way, they encounter a young hitchhiker who shoots herself with a revolver. The kids contact the sheriff, who takes a long time to come down to meet them. Two of them wander over to a large homestead, which they discover is inhabited by a clan of psychopathic cannibals, including the sheriff and the people at the roadside stand! The leader of these is Leatherface - a 6'4' giant wearing a blood-splattered apron and a mask of human skin, who carries a nasty & loudly-buzzing chainsaw. One at a time, the young college students fall prey to the demented Leatherface and the cannibalistic inbreds, until only one girl remains - Erin. She must stay alive long enough to reveal the horrible secret of Leatherface to the world....Will she escape 'The Buzz'?
The acting is pretty solid from our lead cast of Jessica Biel. She puts on a very wonderful performance. I believe this is her first time starring in an actual genre horror film. Good job. Jonathan Tucker comes over to put on a pretty good performance. Hes the tough guy of the group that thinks hes not afraid of anything. Erica Leerhson has a very annoying scream. Not a really good actress, hey get a day job. I like Mike Vogel along with Eric Balfour, two great and young performers.
Unlike the original, this film is actually pretty violent. Thats exactly what I want to see. We kind of get an attempt at watching an 80's film, but Jonathan Liebesman (Texas Chainsaw Massacre The Beginning) fails at that part.
The editing is done very nicely. The beginning sequence I thought was the strong part of the movie, pretty freaky stuff. If only there was an Unrated version.
