Movie Review by B Movie Ben
May 14th, 2007

Happy Birthday, Cate

Soon, we will be subjected to the supposed story of a journalist known, not for his accomplishments, but for his death. Veronica Guerin (Cate Blanchett) was known for both.

She died as she lived - in the pursuit of a story that needed to be told. She may have, indeed been reckless in the pursuit of that story, but her courage under fire is no less heroic because of it.

Blanchett performs magnificently in this film as she does in many others (Elizabeth, for one). Giving a magnetic performance with a perfect Irish accent, she imbues the character with a lot more presence than the script and the director (Joel Schumacher) called for.

She is supported by a fine performance by Ciarán Hinds (Amazing Grace) as Gilligan's henchman (and Guerin's source) John Traynor.
