Movie Review by Tony
April 4th, 2006

"The Station Agent" is unlike any movie you have seen before, or will ever see again. It is comedy, a drama, and a whole lot more. It is one of those movies that does not do a lot, but says a lot and is one of those special movies that hits the right chords with you. A movie you will want to talk about for a long time after seeing it. See many times and catch things you missed. It will make you smile, laugh, and just win you over by downright sweetness.

It is about Fin (Peter Dinklage), a man with a passion for trains whose only friend passes away suddenly. His friend leaves him behind an abandoned train station in the middle of nowhere. He figures here he can get piece and quiet and work on his trains and be left alone. You see, he is a dwarf. So people are always looking at him, laughing, making jokes, and bothering him.

I'm not shy about saying Peter does a great performance here. He barely speaks and simply does not care about anything but trains. He likes to keep conversation minimum, he wants go on his way, and live his life. He has long abandoned hopes and faith in the human race. He is not looking for sympathy or help. Just the opposite. He ignores help and people. Yet he conveys a lifetime of emotions, pain, and loneliness in his walk and face.

Near his train station, is a friendly Cuban named Joe (Bobby Cannavale). His father is in the hospital, so he is helping his father out with his hot dog stand. He is a hot dog vendor. He loves to chat and is very, very friendly. This is not what Fin had hoped for when he moved there. He is persistent and downright bothersome with Fin. I could see a whole movie based on their comical relationship.

Also, a few blocks down is a troubled woman who lost her son, she is played by Patrica Clarkson. She is dealing with issues with her husband and her lost son. All of these characters have nothing in common. Nothing alike. The only thing they share is they all live isolated lives.

The speech in this movie is limited as Fin does not talk much. This movie is pushed forward by the interaction of the characters and how we care so much about them. Fin is not your stereotypical dwarf. He is smart and very resourceful. Fin learns that there is people out there just like him. They might not have the same problem, but they are lonely and different and misunderstood.

He learns that there is people out there who will treat him like a person. He can be respected. He can be valued. He can be loved. He can be helpful. Joe and Olivia learn a lot from him. They also help him to trust people again and not hide and be sheltered. He can be himself, but with other people. Not just himself.

The friendship between these three oddballs is what the movie is about and we why love it just the same. These are good hearted, funny, unique and different people. We all know people like the people in this movie. Spending time with them is a treasure. They are all themselves and behave like themselves, not anyone else. It is something to appreciate in them.

This movie is about finding the right people to form the right friendships that change your life.

"The Station Agent" is an overlooked sweet movie. Check it out.
