Movie Review by Zara
January 28th, 2007

Am I missing something?

I absolutely do not get the appeal of this movie. It received a great deal of praise when it was released and there were people claiming that they were rolling in the aisles when watching it.

I, on the other hand, was trying to keep from falling asleep.

OK, so I'm one of those b*tches who thinks her own kid is the funniest thing ever but is annoyed by other people's precocious brats. Since the story is focused around a slacker who passes himself off as his friend in order to be a substitute teacher at a private school for the heavy duckets that they are willing to pay, there really isn't anything to appeal to me.

Why? Because when Jack Black is in Jack Black Mode, he irritates me. I like him better when he is subdued and trying to play a character rather than just playing himself and calling it a character. The only time that he was able to successfully pull that off was in HIGH FIDELTY. Now he's pigeon-holed into it and playing it to the hilt for the paycheck.

I couldn't for the life of me understand why people found it funny but I will give it some credit. First for Joan Cusak who is hilarious as the headmistress of the private school. Seeing her groove to Stevie Nicks is priceless. Second is the fact that Sarah Silverman is in it. Having that Jew goddess involved will always add a star of credit to an otherwise uninspired outing.
