The Cast Get 6/5
There are plenty of courtroom dramas out there. Each with their own subtle twists and turns. I guess you either like them or don't. I think some people find them tiresome and boring while others see them as thrilling and cerebral. I like to plant myself firmly slap bang in the middle. This one however I found to be incredibly immersing and highly entertaining.
I must admit, this 'review' is going to be a challenge. If you have not seen this film then it simply be unfair of me to even hint at plot happenings. I think the whole idea of films such as these is to entertain the viewer by surprising and shocking. Needless to say, there is plenty going on, I wouldn't recommend going to make a cup of tea without hitting pause.
The actual subject matter of the film could very well be a topic of discussion for a great many of you. Gun laws, civil rights and laying the blame I would imagine would be something that you all have an opinion on. Me? Meh, not so much. Guns are illegal where I come from, but whatever your stance the film, for the most part, is balanced and objective (for the most part). The real story is the process of Jury selection. Supposed background skulduggery and of course, money, money, money.
The real pulling power to this film is the cast. It is quite impressive and it seems every single one of the actors and actresses seemed to be getting out of the right side of the bed for the duration of the shoot. In fact, if you see this film for any reason it should be the excellent performances of Cusack, Hackman, Hoffman, Davison, Mcgill.......etc. etc. The scene where Hoffman and Hackman 'face off' in the men's room is quite, quite brilliant. Rachel Weisz has never looked so pretty either. I cannot stress it enough, the cast were fantastic, with an inferior ensemble the whole film may have ended up pants.
All this is marred by an overly Hollywood sugary ending but it is brief and I am not going to give anything away. I would recommend this to anyone. All the ups and downs can be easily followed, it really is not too high brow. You would indeed have to have a severe case of ADD to lose interest and as I said, I enjoyed it and so should you.

| It's a pretty good film. Best scene: The bathroom with Gene Hackman and Dustin Hoffman. "I dont give a sh*t".....Gene can deliver a line like no one else. |
