Movie Review by Rodney

Argh!

With the sequel to the 2003 summer blockbuster now in theatres, I felt the urge to review this film. And when I say review, I mean honestly pick apart the pieces of this beloved instant classic.

The story is simple: greedy, malicious pirates have been cursed from raiding an Aztec chest of gold and to atone for their poor decision, they must return every piece, as well as a smidgen of blood, back to the chest.

Orlando Bloom plays Will Turner, a whiney, emo, blacksmith who never shuts up about his beloved "Elizabeth." Bloom makes me fear the future of theatre. He doesn't have the gusto of a real actor and every time I see him on screen (in anything) I wince. Keira Knightly plays... that's right, you guessed it, "Elizabeth." She can actually stay in character. Johnny Depp, by far, is the films strongest point. His portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow is a joy to watch and the role landed him an Oscar nod. He's crafty, rough and intoxicated. He's what truly kept this ship afloat.

Moving on to the worst aspect of the film: the script. The script is awful. The story only progresses from some ridiculous negotiation. I counted at least 5 instances where people were negotiating, and the result? A character didn't properly specify on the stipulations of their demands, ergo it creates a loophole and more fighting. Bloom screaming, "Elizabeth" every 15 minutes, doesn't help the situation either.

The music is exciting and the fight scenes, although utterly useless (you can't kill someone who is undead, so stop trying already!!!), are fun to watch. That and Johnny Depp keeps me interested and forces me to slap down my eight dollars and fifty cents for another go in Pirates II. Hopefully Bloom's character will be mute and no one will be allowed to bargain anything. I know it's a long shot -- but we can be optimistic.

Eh it was something different. I had to see the first movie since I've been home about 8 times cause all my friends love it, so seeing them doing something different was exciting for me. I can see the plot holes and there was too much going on. I'm gonna see it again Thursday to get a better grasp on it.

Johnny Depp sold that entire movie. Gotta love a man who can get an Oscar nod for playing a character from a Disney theme park ride.
