Movie Review by Zara

Meh

This was one of those movies where the performance of the lead actor was highly touted by the famed critics, talking about how Philip Seymour Hoffman really nailed the pain and frustration of a character in debt up to his ears and desperate to try and absolve the situation.

I wasn't impressed.

OWNING MAHOWNY tells the tale of some boring shlub who works in a prominent bank in Canada. He's also a quiet gambler, racking up a massive amount of debt with the local bookies. When he is forced to pay off his debts or face not being allowed to place bets, he gets the idea to embezzle money from some of the riches clients that he represents.

A story of a compulsive gambler would be more interesting if he was either A) funnier or B) learned his damn lesson. Mahowny manages to do neither. We get to see him spiral further down, amassing more debt and needing to continue gambling to try and make up his mounting losses.

The movie itself is dull. My attention span might not be the greatest to begin with, but this was ridiculous. Minnie Driver is completely wasted as a shlumpy looking girlfriend who whines and yet is super supportive of a boyfriend clearly unworthy of her. Female characters like this make me want to vomit. Grow a spine.

The acting is good, believable even if I don't like what the actors go through. I just wasn't moved by the true story. Maybe Canadians are more boring than I thought.
