In Sofia Coppola's second film Lost In Translation, stars Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson finally show two actors on the screen becoming humans instead of just overblown characters you would and could only see in the movies. Both Murray and Johansson completely understand who their characters are and they collectively tap into the center of those character's loneliness. Bill Murray, who plays Bob Harris in what may just go down as the actor's greatest performance, has scenes in which Bob must have this painful phone conversations with his wife who is back home with the kids while Bob is away on this business trip in Tokyo. The conversations are distant and hard, and with just the way Murray handles himself within, he goes to literally show us Bob Harris' heart breaking over and over again.
Director Sofia Coppola shows us more with just these characters reactions to life and the feelings in their eyes then most dialogue-drowning films made today could even attempt to. The quietness in this film is so appropriate and it tells us so much more then any amount of dialogue would, which is why the final scene in this film is so pitch perfect. The reactions we get from both actors, especially Murray, tells everything we need to know. Not to mention it shows both actors doing what it is actors are suppose to do: Convey complete realism.
