Movie Review by Joe

*Deep sigh* and then the saga ends...

In December of 2003, The Return of the King hit theaters. Directed by Peter Jackson, it was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, and it won 11 Academy Awards, including Best Director (Jackson was nominated for the previous two movies as well, but this was the first he won), and Best Picture of the Year (the only other sequel to gain this honor was The Godfather 2).

The movie begins with Gollum/Smeagol's story, about how he used to be a half-ling and found the ring in the water and slowly turned into Gollum. Then him, Frodo and Sam continue on their journey.

Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Gandalf and Theoden ride to Saruman's headquarters where they find it completely destroyed, thanks to the Ents. They are reunited with Merry and Pippin, and if you want to know what happens to Saruman, you need to see the extended edition of the movie.

They return to Rohan and Pippin uses the palantir of Saruman to see Sauron's plan. His next attack will be on the other kingdom of men, Gondor. Gandalf and Pippin ride to Gondor to warn the steward of Gondor, Denethor (John Noble), who is also the father of Boromir and Faramir.

Gollum speaks of his plan to kill the Hobbits, and Sam overhears. He tries to convince Frodo he's telling the truth, but Frodo eventually turns on Sam, and Sam leaves. Frodo and Gollum enter a mysterious tunnel where a huge spider named Shelob is in wait. Gollum trapped Frodo and leaves him, but Frodo escapes the spider and they fight, and Gollum falls over a cliff. Frodo is soon attacked again by Shelob and is knocked unconscious, but an old friend comes to his aid. However, Sam is unable to stop two of Sauron's men from taking Frodo to one of the outside towers, but he is quick enough to take the ring before they take Frodo.

Sam goes and defeats many of the enemies to free Frodo and reuinites him with the ring. Together, they enter Mount Doom in hopes of destroying the ring, but Gollum is not far behind.

The steard of Gondor will not listen to Gandalf's plea, thinking that Gandalf is there to supplant him with the true king of Gondor - Aragorn. Pippin lights the beacon of warning and Aragorn sees it from Rohan, and the Riders of Rohan set out to help.

While they're waiting for aid, the Ringwraiths and a small army of Sauron's advance on Gondor's last line of defense. Faramir retreats to the main stronghold and Gandalf fends off the foes. The steward wants Faramir to return to the fallen city and reclaim it, and Faramir does as his father wishes, and all but him are slaughtered by the enemy. Faramir returns, unconscious, and the steward thinks his son is dead. He goes crazy and starts a funeral pire for both him and his son.

While this is happening, the full onslaught of Sauron's forces have advanced on Gondor. Armies of massive proportions are bombarding the city, and it's up to Gandalf and Pippin to stop Denethor's plan and to fend off the enemy. Along the way Gandalf runs into the Witch King - who no man can kill - and that battle is very cool and you can see it in the extended edition.

While on their way to Gondor, Aragon, Legolas and Gimli depart from Rohan and enter the mysterious mountain where an army of long-dead men are not resting in peace. The only way they can rest is by fulfilling their oath to fight, and the only one who can summon them is the king of Gondor.

Eowyn wants to fight so she disguises herself as a rider of Rohan and helps Merry learn how to fight.

Theoden and the Riders of Rohan arrive to see Gondor being attacked, and they immediately enter the frey. There is an unbelievable scene between Eowyn and the Witch King - a man that no man can kill - that made me literally stand up in my theater seat and cheer. It's so awesome!

As the good forces seem to be losing, right on time Aragon arrives with the undead army, and the battle is quickly won by the good guys. Not soon after they muster up the remaining army to march on Mount Doom itself, giving Frodo a chance to destroy the ring.

Exceptional acting, stunning visuals, and a battle scene that goes beyond the word 'epic' is what makes The Return of the King such an exceptional film - one people should see over and over and over again!

Gimli: Certainty of death. Small chance of success. What are we waiting for?
