Movie Review by Zara
February 1st, 2007

Have you seen my dad?

An overprotective father trying to shelter his disabled son ("lucky fin!") ends up losing him when the son rebels. He then spends the rest of the movie battling to get to him and get him back home safely.

This set-up might have come off melodramatic and contrived if it was done with human actors. The fact that it's an animated fish movie helps with the TV movie of the week set up. It strips back what would have come off wrong in the hands of, well, human facial expressions.

What I loved best about this movie was the feature that most people don't pick up on. The fact that Nemo essentially is representative of a person with a disability and how his parental unit is trying so hard to protect him that he's holding him back. I love that it shows how something that might be detrimental in some cases turns out to be one of Nemo's winning features. He tries harder and his determination is infectious.

Ellen DeGeneres as the voice of Dory has to be one of the best casting moves ever made in a film. Playing a fish with a very short attention span who can't remember things for very long, Dory is the absolute heart of this flick, even though it's supposed to be about father and son. Sticking to things in the face of adversity, believing in yourself because you don't know how to believe in anything else and feeling that sense of pride when you are able to achieve something great. I f*cking love the character of Dory, animated or not.

I took my Midget to see this movie in the theaters about 5 times. The very first word that she said (after "mommy") was "fishy." I remember seeing the posters for FINDING NEMO and thinking to myself: "Thank you. Thank you for making a fish movie, and thank you for it being Pixar who did it." They absolutely did not let me down. Great story-telling and great filmmaking.

I've been waiting for you to post this review. I was pregnant when this movie came out, and I went to see it several times at the theatre, and cried every one of them. This is such a beautiful story, and you are right that if it were humans, it would not have been as moving. Great review!

Imagine if this film was done live action. During a home invasion, a woman and all of her kids are killed, except one, who is horribly mutilated. The father becomes incredibly overprotective of the child, and when the child is kidnapped, enlists help from local retard to help him find his son... pure exploitation at its best!!
