Zellweger Owns It
Yes it is kitschy and often it tries too hard, but all in all, Peyton Reed's sweet little tribute to 60's comedies is a winner.
Renee Zellweger gives one of her best performances in a complex and weird role. There is a point where she gives an intense monologue to Ewan McGregor and the camera doesn't cut away for what seems like ten minutes. She goes from one extreme of emotion to the complete opposite, but she captivates you. They should show that scene in acting classes, that is what they call the 'it' factor.
The sex jokes played out with camera angles are cute and McGregor is pure sex, but this film is all about the ladies.
Sarah Paulson (so good on 'Studio 60') co-stars as Zellweger's publisher and she is just as witty and resentful of a woman's place as she could be. Wanting to be taken seriously in the publishing industry, she is constantly relegated to grabbing 'sanka' for the boys. Paulson runs this role with panache and you love every minute she is on screen.
A great original comedy.
