Movie Review by Chris
October 29th, 2007

In a top secret British lab, peace activists release a monkey infected with a highly powerful and contagious test virus, despite the begging of the scientist in charge of operations. 28 days later, the infection has gone from one monkey to the majority of the UK, the host of the virus is lost in a murderous state, losing all logic and instinct. Jim, a courier, wakes up from his coma in an empty hospital, to find that the streets have been heavily littered and are empty. His fear began when he saw no one. His terror erupted when he realized he wasn't alone.

28 Days Later, directed by Danny Boyle, is one of the scariest and more original horror films to be released in years. Though I have not seen Danny's older film Trainspotting, 28 Days Later will simply go down as a classic in the zombie sub-genre. Danny Boyle doesnt borrow from the legendary zombie master George Romero, simply because this is not a zombie movie. We do have creatures that act and appear like zombies, but theyre classified as "The Infected". This is where a lot of people get confused about this movie. So 28 Days Later has an amazing visual style, great cinematography and tells a story about survival and instinct, along with being scary and impressive in many ways.

Jim is played by Cillian Murphy, who starred in Danny's most recent film Sunshine and had a smaller role in The Dark Knight. This film marked the first time I ever seen him on screen and I do have to say that he deeply impressed me not only as an actor, but by the character he portrayed. So our introduction to Jim is an overhead nude shot of him laying on a hospital bed, we have no idea how he got there or what he's even doing there. He walks out and steals some sodas and such, then realizes that hes basically alone. This marks the scariest part of the movie, not by somebody jumping out at you and scaring you, but the fact that he is alone in this huge city. This is also the scene where we get the strongest opening of the films score, which was a huge standout to me.

Danny Boyle impresses me because we get a string of wide shots which show just how alone Jim is in London at this moment. It kind of seems like a post 9/11 movie, where we get the shot where theres a wall with missing posters up and the whole place is a wreck. It really seems like it was meant to show a post apocalyptic world which just so happen to be released after September 11. Through all the tricks Danny does behind the camera, when he shows the shots of the city, we cant help but marvel at the fact that it really is just him and it truly creeps you out.

We get a pretty creepy introdcution to "The Infected". When Jim walks into a church to see if anybody is inside, he sees groups of people lying on the floor, though it seems as if theyre dead, some get up and proceed to chase him. Now you dont really realize it, but there are tiny difference between Infected and zombies. Zombies live on the fact that they must feed on human flesh, while Infected, the people arent exactly dead, theyre just insane. Instead of eating people and such, they beat them or torture them in bizarre ways.

Another thing I truly loved about this movie was the fact that what the characters do and the situations that unfold in front of them are kind of reality portrayed. The movie gets really scary when we begin to think that this disaster which is occuring is the movie, isnt to far from reality. The whole thing began from infected monkey and then there is always one activist which has to let them loose, and destroys the world.

28 Days Later is a seriously scary movie. It is made for both thriller and horror fans. One of the best zombie movies ever made.
