Sandler's Best
I have been defending this film since its release. For some reason people refuse to accept that Adam Sandler ('Billy Madison', 'The Waterboy'), king of the mindless comedy, could actually be a good actor. How wrong these people are evern if they refuse to admit it. Paul Thomas Anderson ('Boogie Nights', 'Magnolia') has always been open to controversy, but this casting choice caused this film to be overlooked by many. What people missed is a deep journey into what makes a man as emotionally stilted as Sandler's Barry, how much people really need others to understand them and the power of a real connection between two forgotten people. Emily Watson is especially good as the object of Barry's affection, but it is Sandler's stirring portrait of silenced rage that carries this film and makes it a classic.
