'Y Tu Mama Tambien' is like the ultimate wet dream; two perpetually horny teenage boys go on a road trip with a sultry older woman who enjoys wild and frequent sex. Everything else is kicked to the side, in this erotic, exhilarating adventure from director Alfonso Cuaron. Well, maybe calling it an adventure is incorrect. But, you do always feel like a voyeur, watching something that is both stylish and sensual, titillating yet tawdry, intelligent yet occasionally irritating. That last adjective may seem unfair, but frankly, it perfectly describes my feelings towards Tenoch (Diego Luna) and Julio (Bernal), who are often arrogant, immature, selfish, and jealous, vying for the attention of Luisa (Verdu), though we can perhaps expect such things from advanced adolescents ready to crash headlong into adulthood. Luisa certainly spreads her legs for both young men, even gets them to romance one another, which is probably something they do a lot anyway. Tenoch and Julio we first meet as they screw their girlfriends before they leave on a summer vacation to Europe. The two of them are best friends.
I suppose they draw closer and learn more about themselves as they travel with Luisa (who has experienced several sad things in her own life), but none of that really matters to me. I just enjoyed the film's wonderful energy and sumptuous visuals, and the beauty of its surprisingly crisp and well-crafted Spanish dialogue. Luna and Bernal are handsome, but also very daring, few actors get naked and bear it all as often in their whole careers, as these two do in this single movie. Verdu is gorgeous, effortlessly crude and classy all at once, like a big sister to the boys one moment, a mother the next, a lover the rest of the time. I suppose the film comes close to being soft-core pornography at several instances, but that poses few problems for me, as I happen to watch a lot of that, myself, and none of it looks quite as flashy and elegant as this.
