Contains Spoilers

Y tu mamá también is a story about two friends Julio and Tenoch. They are young, handsome and sexually active. Their girlfriends Ana and Cecilia have left Mexico for the summer to go on a trip around Europe, leaving the boys pu**y-less. From the farewell scene at the airport, the boys go on a drug and alcohol binge and try to get laid. I found these scenes to be reminiscent of Larry Clarks Kids.

Tenoch meets his cousin Jano at a wedding, Jano is a journalist, who has a beautiful wife named Louisa. After meeting his cousin; Tenoch and Julio see Louisa and zone in on her. Tenoch and Julio chat her up and make sly sex euphemisms, they ask her to come with them to a fictitious beach called Heavens Mouth. It was a little predictable what was going to happen but hey...

Jano cheats on Louisa and in an apparent form of retaliation she rings up Tenoch and asks if she can come with them to Heavens Mouth. Julio, Tenoch and Louisa embark upon a road trip to find the beach, along the way they stop in intriguing Mexican restaurants that look like glorified slums and sleep in shabby hotels and the drama begins.

The opening sequence in this movie involves sex, a rather in your face scene, but the sex seems to be toned down at the middle-end when most movies usually build up to it. Luisa sleeps with Tenoch in the hotel room as Julio watches; afterwards Julio tells Tenoch that he f*cked his girlfriend. There is an enormous amount of tension between the two which leaves Louisa to think that it's because she slept with Tenoch, so to fix the problem she screws Julio in the car. Afterwards, Tenoch tells Julio that he slept with his girlfriend. The testosterone flies and an intense yelling match begins and ends with Louisa walking off.

They pick Louisa up and continue to find Heavens Mouth. They take an off road and end up at another beach where they meet a fisherman who takes them to the real Heavens Mouth. They get drunk in a bar and Julio reveals that he had sex with Tenoch's mother too. Both of the boys end up sleeping with Louisa, as she goes down on them the boys start to kiss each other. They go home, break up with their girlfriends and leave behind that summer and their friendship. Louisa stayed with the fisherman's family and died a month later of cancer, which she knew she had all along but failed to tell anyone.

The narration in this film reminded me a bit of Amelie, or Run Lola Run, it mainly consisted of insights to the characters lives, mainly the tragic. I overlooked the farting and silly boyish antics such as masturbating on diving boards, but those scenes needed to be there to portray the immaturity of the boys not only mentally but sexually. It is beautifully shot has amazing scenery and contains very realistic acting. Overall I thought this film was great, it reinforces the fact that a movie can be good without cgi, big budgets, special effects and Brad Pitt. If you like City of god and Amores Perros you will dig this movie.

Trivia

The director also directed Harry Potter and the Prince of Azkaban

It broke Mexican box office records grossing $2.2 million dollars in the first week.

The New Zealand Society for the promotion of community standards (extremist Christians) kicked up a fuss about the movie and had a problem with the censorship board letting it come through uncut, it is one of many on their list of naughty films. They even stooped so low as to accuse the head leader of the censorship board of being gay and thus being the reason so many questionable films are being leaked through. It has an R18 rating in New Zealand.
