Maggie May I...
This isn't your standard love story, although it is very much one of the most romantic love stories out there.
A sad and emotionally twisted young woman goes in search of a job and finds one as the secretary for an eccentric lawyer. His stunted speech and bizarre mannerisms intrigue her. After a short time she learns that she finds solace in her chaotic mind when he tells her what to do, thus setting off a decadent tale of S&M.
Maggie Gyllenhaal is probably the best actress of her time. She doesn't have that classically beautiful face which sells a blockbuster and yet she's prettier than your standard character actress. She's in that odd middle ground where she can take on daring roles and have the opportunity to play them to the hilt where a character actress wouldn't come off believable because she wasn't pretty enough and a pretty actress would harness in some of the unbridled tension that needs to go with these types of roles because she doesn't want to damage her image.
This is a kinky story that has a tender heart at the center of it. The truth is, even if we don't like what other people do in their bedrooms (or offices) we should respect that everyone sees affection in different ways. SECRETARY is a voyeuristic way of being able to watch one of these ways.
