"The Rules of Attraction," otherwise known as "When WB Stars Go Wild!"
All-in-all, this movie was a vain attempt to be more grown-up, using effects, music, and that irritating rewind camera motion way too many times. Reminded me of "Requiem for a Dream," only "Requiem" was stellar, exceptional and amazing, wereas "Rules" was dull, predictable and lame.
The beginning of the movie is a series of narrations from what becomes the three main characters. First we have Lauren (Shannyn Sossamon), who is a virgin but wants to lose her virginity to her crush/stalkee Victor (Kip Pardue) but instead loses it to some random guy.
Then we meet overtly gay Paul (Ian Somerhalder) who is trying to get with this straight guy by offering drugs.
Finally we meet the 'main man' Sean (James Van Der Beek), who is beaten-up and tearing up a letter. I'm sure both will be explained later, but as of right now he's looking for some girl to bang, and ends up finding one, Kelly (Kate Bosworth).
Then after the opening credits we're rewound to days before this party. The movie focuses, indeed, on these three characters. Lauren is the virgin who wants to be with Victor, but he is in Europe. Her drug-addicted roommate Lara (Jessica Biel) is the partier, who will sleep with pretty much anything that's moving.
Paul has a major crush on Sean, and his whole aim in this film is to knock boots with him. Before I vomit I will end this discussion.
Sean receives letters in the mail he thinks are from Lauren and falls in love with her. Of course things are not that easy either. Life isn't good for this drug dealer, as those he got the drugs from are demanding payment which he doesn't have.
So ultimately we have a standard run-of-the-mill teenage drama that tries to break into the big leagues but fails to do so.
Oh yea, Faye Dunaway and Fred Savage also appear in this film.
Sean Bateman: Lauren I want to know you
Lauren: What does that mean know me, know me, nobody ever knows anybody else, ever! You will never know me.

| I have such a hard time watching this movie, but it's like a train wreck. I'll keep coming back to it even though I know I'm going to be disappointed. |
