Movie Review by Simon
May 17th, 2007

It wasn't a huge success, despite having a large budget behind it and the star billing of Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey- one suspicion is that the premise, that of the human race being systematically beaten back to near-extinct levels by dragons, was simply a little too much to swallow. Which is a shame, because it's actually a pretty good flick; dark, gritty, and containing some great back-and-forth between Bale and McConaughey.

Bale plats Quinn, leader of a band of refugees hiding out in a castle in England, desperately trying to both keep his group from fracturing and to eke out a living from a country that has been singed and burned progressively since the dragons re-awoke from a millennial slumber (Quinn, incidentally, was there to see it happen). Enter McConaughey, leader of a band of US soldiers, who was a plan to wipe out the race once and for all and reclaim the planet.

Putting paid once and for all to anyone who believed him to be a lightweight leading man with his performance in this and Bill Paxton's FRAILTY, McConaughey is bestial and brutal as the increasingly unhinged Van Zan, a man who lives only for death. Bale, as yet unrecognised as one of the great talents of contemporary cinema, brings the promise shown in AMERICAN PSYCHO to the fore here as Quinn, a man trying to ensure the survival of his race.

Some suspension of disbelief is required- fire-breathing dragons aren't necessarily the easiest concept to get the mind around. But once past that, the action and character development unfold hand-in-hand and an overlooked gem is revealed.

I saw this when it came out and do not remember alot about it but I do remember thinking that this good have been better.......it seems like there was alot of dragging spots and a lack of action.......I might go back and watch it again....

I liked this one a lot. It was directed by a dude from the X-Files stable of directs...in fact, the dude who directed the movie version. Which I also love.

I thought Xfiles the movie was horrible.....when you have TV shows that are more entertaining then a full length, full budgeted film.....there is something wrong...

I thought the opening scenes were brilliant...

Only the second film I saw Bale in, I'm now a big fan.

I was the same- this came right after AMERICAN PSYCHO and Bale is now one of my absolute draw-cards for a film, especially after THE MACHINIST.

This is one of those movies I totally dug, and everyone else was "blah" about. What the hell is wrong with people.
