I have no true words to describe 'May', a sick and twisted horror film from the mind of Lucky McKee. I really didn't like it, but at the same time there is this little tiny voice inside of me telling me how much of a sleeper hit this film is. I am a horror freak, I love films that are drenched in violence and gore, it's not that I'm a freak, it's just goofy entertainment meant to scare and/or disgust an audience. 'May' is very slow moving, but from the moment it began it felt so familiar to me, that it lost it's true originality right then and there. As the movie progressed, it felt just even more familiar, and in the last 30 minutes of the movie turned into a whole new beast.
May Canady (Angela Bettis) is a strange person. As a kid, she had a problem with her eye and sported a cool little eye patch. Of course, kids picked on her, completely ruining her social life. On her birthday, her mother gives her a doll which she made as a kid, and this became May's new best friend. As May grew older, she works at an animal hospital, and one day meets Adam Stubbs (Jeremy Sisto) whom she falls in love with. Just as they become a thing, he completely screws her over and ditches her after one awkward encounted between the two of them.
In the midst of her emotions running wild for Adam, her lesbian co-worker Polly (Anna Faris) gets the hots for her, but just as things heat up, ditches her as well. So basically, this is a movie filled with one girl getting her hopes raised, just to be dropped down, over and over again. Which is the reason why she goes crazy at the end of the movie. This doll May has been given as a kid is like her best friend, she talks to her, though we can't hear her. The doll gives her advice on things like how to kiss and what a man likes to be done to them. All her advice quickly turns against her though, leading to really awkward situations between her and her two, lovers I suppose.
Running at 99 minutes, the majority of this movie showcases this girl get crushed by people who raise her hopes up. The relationship between her and Adam start off okay, but quickly get ruined right when they get to know eachother a little too well. The movie is extrordinarily slow, lead by situations we've seen in other similar films. We've all seen the one girl, who is shown to be a freak, fall in love, get broken and go nuts. Carrie, anyone? Angela Bettis and Jeremy Sisto do a great job in their roles, leading the entire movie just by themselves. I like Anna Faris, but she's just weird in this film and I couldnt find a soft spot for her at all.
When I think back to the long awaited climax to the film, I feel how I felt while watching it, disgusting. Slasher movies dont bother me, nor do any other gore fest film out there. The biggest thing that disturbed my about the end of this movie though is the fact that, as she meets these people, she finds certain physical things about them that she loves. With Polly it's her throat, with others it could be hands or legs. Well, lets just say after she takes out these certain ones, she tends to build these parts together in a sick and twisted doll, which she lays in her bed and practically sleeps with. Maybe it was the randomness that disturbed me, maybe it's just a sick film.
I don't mind sick movies, actually I enjoy them. 'May' though, found a spot inside me and twisted my stomach. It's a sleeper hit, but definitely not to the proportion it could have been. I found the film pointlessly sick, drawn out and utterly predictable. While many have called it a classic, I call it another horror film we all know and eventually will see, maybe ignore it and maybe talk about it for a few days. 'May' falls to predictability and lack of catching my attention, and the sad part is that I wanted to enjoy this movie so much.
