Ohana
When my Midget was around 2 years old, she latched onto this movie. She became completely addicted to it, watching it up to 3 times a day and trying to hula around the living room. Because the movie hadn't been as big of a success as some of the other Disney ventures, by the time that she was hooked on the DVD many of the products related to the film were no longer in stores. I spent countless nights tracking down LILO & STITCH items on eBay so that she could wear the clothing and have the stuffed animals. We even convinced the local video store to give up their cardboard popups.
You would think that I would have grown tired of the multiple viewings, but I didn't. If I'd truly been sick of the movie, she would have never been allowed to watch it as much as she did. Fact is, this is my favorite Disney cartoon ever released. My favorite Disney character is Stitch, the little alien who is mostly bad with a little bit of good in him.
Reminds me a lot of myself.
I tear up every time the movies comes to an end and Stitch asks to say good-bye to his family and gives the Ohana speech. I understand a family being little and broken, but good... still good. It's one of the only cartoon films where a family is in danger of being ripped apart by Child Protection Services. It was a brave move that I wish more people could have appreciated.
Over time LILO & STITCH has found its place in the popular library of Disney. I think in part because of the subsequent tv show that they created and in part from so many of the parents like me. Adults who ended up finishing the disc even after their little one had passed out.
This is a cartoon that can be appreciated by the Midgets and the big people of this world. It's good. Real good.
