Gory, But Lacks on Scares

Before seeing Ghost Ship, I heard many positive and negative reviews about the film, but, along with Fear Dot Com, I rented it. When it first began with the opening gore scene, I thought maybe the film could have some potential, but about 45 minuter later, I was bored out of my mind. While there are many moments of great gore gags and some really kick ass directorial moments in here, the story, characters and script were all very weak, and I felt like I have seen the film before. Stale acting also helped bring the rating down.

When a young man discovers an abandoned, but slowly sinking ship in the ocean, he takes some photos and brings them to some salvagers who are interested in the boat. When they get there though, they find out the boat is haunted, and while its sinking, its messing with their heads.

Gabriel Byrne plays as the captain, a really messed up captain. I thought his performance was fine, not anything award winning, but it was normal horror film acting. Julianna Marguiles was the highlight of the movie, as she puts up a very emotional and real performance.

Steve Beck directs the film, while the movie is just above 90 minutes, there are some moments where the directing really stands out. Theres a flashback sequence which was just flat out awesome to watch. There is no lack of gore here either as we get people chopped up, hooks in the chin, impalings, gunshots galore and a few other things.

On the flaws side of things, umm everything else.

Bottom Line: Had Potential

I agree with you.....the scene with what is it a power line or cable or something (been a while since I saw it) which decapitates and kills the whole crew was awesome....I was hoping for a lot more then i got out of the film though and I did start to get bored with it about half way through.

Still I would pick this over Feardotcom ANY day.
