Really Really Close To Great
Just loved this big screen adaptation.
The only flaw, for me, is Catherine Zeta-Jones stealing a part that so rightfully belongs to Bebe Neuwirth. That has always bothered me. Zeta-Jones is fine, but she is reaching and trying to own a role that, I feel, is too big for her.
Renee Zellweger shocked me with her great portrayal of Roxie. It is not an easy role, she is the corrupt heart of this story of merry murderesses, but Zellweger walks away with the film.
Queen Latifah is great as Mama Morton, Richard Gere shows some serious chops as Billy Flynn and John C. Reilly has one of the best songs as Amos with 'Mr. Cellophane', and he owns it.
This is a dark take, done right, with great costumes, art direction and excellent choreography.
If only they would listen to be, this could be five stars....damn you Zeta-Jones!
