Movie Review by Melanie
February 1st, 2007

The first time I saw this movie I was pissed. I was first introduced to Chicago on a class trip to London. My choices were Chicago, which I had never heard of, and Les Mis. Not wanting to watch the most depressing story ever set to music, I chose Chicago. This was five years before the movie was released.

I was so moved by the production, there weren't words. I loved every moment of it. So, when the movie ventured off a bit, I was not happy. About the only thing I loved the first time was Catherine Zeta Jones. Having said this, I did watch it again.

After getting over my initial shock of the differences, I was able to appreciate the differences for what they were. There is a lot that is changed, but it actually enhances the story. I love that the movie drifts in and out of Roxie's fantasies. I also like that there is a distinction between the two. I can't stand when you don't know the reality in the movie, from the dreams or fantasies. (getting off the soapbox)

The music is great, the dancing is superb, the actors are wonderful. I know that Rene Zellweger does not have a background in musical theatre and I believe that it shows. Rene and Catherine are just two different classes of actresses, of course this is partially the point, but still. I'm sorry, don't do a musical unless you can handle it. For me, Rene just barely pulled it off.

You know who I thought was underrated in this? Richard Gere. He really surprised me. I had no idea that he could sing and dance so well. I was thoroughly impressed with him.
