Movie Review by Tony March 31st, 2006

A lot of time was spent and detail on the casting of this movie. From the little actors to the main stars. The cast includes William Hurt, Amanda Peet, Toni Colette, Sydney Pollack, Samuel L. Jackson, Richard Jenkins, and Ben Affleck. But not enough time was spent on making a screenplay that did all of these fine actors justice.
Samuel L. Jackson as Doyle Gipson, who needs this loan for his LIFE, in Paramount's Changing Lanes
Affleck and Jackson are the two main stars of this movie who play two men with two places to go, and two things to do, and who never would have met if not for the circumstance they get into. A car crash. Jackson has to go to court to deal with his divorce and custody. Affleck has to also attend court to show a signed paper for the firm he works for. They are both late.
Affleck leaves the scene of the accident, and this upsets Jackson who is trying to get his life on the straight and narrow. He is recovering from alcoholism and trying to piece his life together with his family and himself. Affleck is a hot shot attorney. They are opposites.
Affleck leaves the scene of the accident, but leaves beyond important court papers that he needed. Because of the accident, Jackson was late and did not get to battle for custody of his children. Jackson has his court papers. This begins a tug of war between the two men for a good portion of the movie.
This could have been a fun premise for a movie if the movie itself made sense. When the tug of war occurs, we see both men act in ways that I did not find believable for their characters or themselves. Plus, add one too many twists and turns in the plot and making a simple story overcomplicated, you come out with a mess.
Ben Affleck as Gavin Banek in Paramount's Changing Lanes
Sam Jackson as expected is solid and enjoyable as always, but I did not buy for one second pretty boy Ben Affleck in the evil role they have him play. Nor did I buy his change of heart. Then the last 15 minutes, the movie becomes a preach fest and tries to shove a message down our throat.
Amanda Peet and Ben Affleck in Paramount's Changing Lanes
In the end, the movie is not quite worth what it puts us through. Too overcomplicated, characters behaving in ways they would not act, along with a dull performance by Affleck, miss the boat on a possible moving human drama that turns into a preach fest and trying far too hard.
