Performances sell it

Based on the true story of a young man who managed to scam both the banking systems around the United States as well as the airline companies at the time, this movie survives on the strength of its cast, including Tom Hanks, Leonardo DiCaprio and Christopher Walken.

One of my favorite scenes, I must admit, is watching Jennifer Garner as a callgirl negotiate for her fee, throwing playing cards at Leo. If only all the girls who were willing to sleep with you for money were that good looking and stupid enough to take a hot check.

This movie has that whole blockbuster feel while managing to tell a story which is neither obsessively action-packed nor painfully melodramatic. Since most movies these days with huge budgets cater to either one of those two I mentioned, I miss the days when more movies like this were made. Movies that were meant to entertain you with subtle humor and not knock you back against your seat as if you'd been slapped in the face.
