Based loosely around France's very own werewolf legend, the Beast of Gevaudan, this French action/horror/buddy movie is a slow burning story that twists and turns and delights in its own sense of mystery.
Samuel Le Bihan and Mark Dacascos star as two problem-solvers sent from the French royal court in the mid eighteenth century to investigate a mysterious spate of killings that have broken out in the province of Gevaudan. Once they arrive they discover that the Beast that has been preying on locals is believed to have supernatural properties, and despite the best efforts of the local nobility and the French army alike, it has avoided all attempts at pursuit and capture.
The film combines many elements from many genres, veering from romance to erotica to humour to martial arts and back again along the way. The running time will count against it for those not in the mood for a drawn-out process, but those willing to invest the time will find themselves rewarded. Le Bihan is perfectly cast as the effortlessly amused Fronsac, and Dacascos as Mani unleashes his martial arts training in almost every second scene. The special effects are by now a little dated, but the sumptuous cinematography and an outstanding supporting cast headed up by Vincent Cassel and Monica Bellucci more than make up for it.
