Movie Review: Adaptation

If screenwriters today had as much talent and creativity as Charlie Kaufman has in his pinkie finger, Hollywood would be a much better place. He is so creative, he can take writer's block and turn it into a masterpiece. (That was his inspiration for the story)

It's about Charlie Kaufman (Nicolas Cage in one of his best roles), who is trying to adapt the story 'The Orchid Thief' by Susan Orlean (Meryl Streep, equally good) which is about John Laroche (Chris Cooper, I think the Oscar speaks for itself), a plant nut.

Take note at the beginning, Charlie insists that he wants to remain true to the book without car chases and drugs and sex. He's a nervous wreak, and is so unsure of himself it hurts. He has a parasitic twin brother who wants to be a screenplay writer like him, and his love life is non-existent, save for the chronic masturbation. He's even scared to meet Susan.

Spike Jonze(director) is masterful. This is his second go around with Charlie Kaufman, and the two make quite a team. 'Being John Malkovich' perfection, and they knock it out of the park again.

This is a film that will make you think. Well no, not really. But that's what's good about it. It's making fun of Hollywood films, but not in the traditional satirical slapsticky way you'd expect. It's very subtle and may recquire a reapeat viewing. But all in all, brilliant.
