There are certain films you hold near and dear to you that other people just don't seem to get. No matter how great you know the film is and no matter how many times you force it down your friend's / family's throats, they just never see the film in the same light you do. And no matter how many times or ways you say you love the film, you know none of the people within earshot truly gets how meaningful the film is to you.
For me, that film is the brilliantly inspiring "About a Boy."
I could try to go into a detailed review of way I think this film is so perfect, but it wouldn't matter in the end because I couldn't honestly justify the greatness of it. For me words can't explain it...seriously. However, for your entertainment and reading pleasure, here are some things I'd like to say about this masterpiece:
Hands down, this is Hugh Grant's greatest performance ever! Sure, he is playing the typical Hugh Grant role, yet here he shines like he never has before. The dude is such a charming bastard that even when he plays a despising, thoughtless, shallow bloke like Will, we still open our hearts to him fully. Bravo!
The title is brilliant because nearly everyone who sees it, myself included, initially thinks that the "Boy" in question that the story is "About" is Nicholas Hoult's Marcus. Granted the story is half his so we may all be right when assuming that, however I like to believe that the "Boy" in question that the story is "About" is Hugh Grant's Will character, who in his thirties, still treats the world and people as carelessly as a child would. I know me figuring this out doesn't make me John Nash or anything, but trust me, a lot of people don't take the time to think of the title like that.
I am never going to read the Nick Hornby book this is based on because it may just ruin the film for me. If I was to read this novel and learn more about these characters, I may not love them all as much as I do. And that scares me so much so I've made a vow never to read the book, that is unless I have it on good authority that it only propels the storyline. Then I will read that book faster then I've ever read anything before. And over and over again, more then likely
This film has changed my life. Okay, maybe that's not completly true, but film has changed my life and this is one of the best films I've ever seen, so possibly this film could have, in some ways, changed my life.
I LOVE THIS FILM! I LOVE THIS FILM! I ... LOVE ... THIS ... FILM! Get it? Good. And for the love of God, if you haven't seen this film, at least take the time to check it out because, as a whole, films very rarely get better than this. There is no faults in this film whatsoever and, in case I haven't said it enough, I love it for that. Simply perfect.
