One ring to rule them all...
So it began...After years and years of anxious anticipation, finally, in December of 2001, it arrived, and I was one of the first in line.
I grew up reading The Lord of the Rings, the classic novel series by J.R.R. Tolkein, and I had seen the previous cartoons and movies, and was highly disappointed. Somehow, I knew that Peter Jackson would direct a masterpiece.
And he did not disappoint. Nominated for 13 Oscars, and winning 4, The Fellowship of the Ring set the stage for the other two to follow.
The story centers around a Hobbit named Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood), who acquires a magic ring from his uncle Bilbo (Ian Holm). Unbeknowst to either of them, the ring was forged by the dark lord Sauron who seeks it to control the entire fate of Middle Earth. Frodo's friend, the powerful grey wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen), sets out to find out information about this ring by going to his 'boss,' the white wizard Saruman (Christopher Lee). Only too late does Gandalf discover Saruman has sided with Sauron, and becomes Saruman's prisoner.
With the help of his Hobbit friends Sam (Sean Astin), Pippin (Billy Boyd), and Merry (Dominic Monaghan), Frodo sets out for Rivendell, where he thinks the ring will be safe. Along the way they run into a mysterious ranger named Striker, who later will be known as his real name Aragon (Viggo Mortensen).
Before they get to Rivendell they run into the Ringwraiths, nine soldiers of Sauron who used to be kings of men before they were corrupted by the ring of power and became mindless unstoppable soldiers who seek the ring for Sauron. On Weathertop, Frodo is stabbed by the Witch King and Aragon must seek assistance from his elven girlfriend Arwen (Liv Tyler). With the magic of the elves, Frodo is spared death and is taken to the elven city of Rivendell.
At the same time, Gandalf enlists the help of the eagles to escape the prison that Sarumon set for him. He goes to Rivendell as well.
At the council of Rivendell, the elven king Elrond (Hugo Weaving), who is also Arwen's father, decides that the ring cannot stay in Rivendell, but must be destroyed in the fires of Mount Doom, Sauron's headquarters, where the ring was originally forged.
Frodo decides that it is his fate to destroy the ring, but he does not go alone. Gandalf and Aragon immediately choose to go with him, along with a man of Gondor named Boromir (Sean Bean), an elf Legolas (Orlando Bloom), and a dwarf Gimli (John Rhys-Davies). Sam, Merry, and Pippin, who are listening from afar, also join Frodo in this task. Thus the Fellowship is born.
As they set out on their trek, they face many foes and heartbreak and decisions that will affect them for the rest of their lives. Ultimately, in the end of the movie, Frodo and Sam depart on their own; Merry and Pippin are taken captive by Sarumon's forces, and Aragon, Legolas, and Gimli set out to find them.
Exceptional acting, unbelievable action, awe-inspiring setting...TFOTR has it all!
Frodo: It's a pity Bilbo didn't kill him when he had the chance.
Gandalf: Pity? It was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play yet, for good or ill before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many.
