Movie Review by Zara
December 16th, 2007

If you go looking for this movie on NetFlix, it's listed under its alternative title, GET DOWN. Which is the more apt description of what's going on here.

A businessman who is trying to avoid interacting with people cuts through a city park and gets lost. In an attempt to find his way out, he encounters a little group of thugs and makes the mistake of pushing down and hurting one of them. They chase him up and tree and then spend the remainder of the day trying to figure out how to get him down.

I was tempted to go through the pointing out of how the characters are stereotypical, but that would defeat the subtle purpose that the movie has. That in our assumptions, we sell people far shorter than they can unleash on us. As the businessman, Hewlett is unapologetic in trying to psychologically tear down the gang, but he also fights back with a physicality that wouldn't have presented itself in another movie.

And rather than assume that street thugs are stupid and unobservant, the movie recognizes that in order for these kids to survive on the streets, they would have had to develop more than their street lingo and confident swagger. Che Bennett is captivating as the manipulative leader of the band of thugs.

Very good movie, very good conversation starter.
