It Zahnbelievable!

I don't know what, if anything, I was expecting from this film. Perhaps that's why I turned out liking it as much as I did. Thinking back to when I first watched it I realize that it's stuck with me over the years. Scenes where Barrymore is supposed to be a teenager and ends up knocked up by the bumbling idiot that she doesn't love, when she had to go to the doctor to figure out what was wrong with her...

I don't know. The movie isn't really a comedy and it sure isn't a typical drama. Towards the end of the movie when Barrymore is playing an old woman she takes on this affected speech pattern which is actually quite grating. However, those scenes are few.

Instead, I believe the reason why this movie so deeply impacted me was the strong performance by Steve Zahn as the bumbling idiot. A stupid guy who just wants to do the right thing but doesn't have the practical resources to be able to fully grasp what the right thing is or why it's so important to do, I see a little bit of my biological father in him. I never really knew the man, but somehow this was always how I'd pictured he was. Zahn plays the role so well that it made me understand a little of what life might have been like for my PGA (paternal gene contributor) and have some pity in my heart for him.

This is not your typical Barrymore flick. And I say that's a good thing.
