Movie Review by Zara
March 15th, 2007

I didn't like the original film either

People were up in arms when this movie was released, b*tching about how it took a beloved cult classic and screwed it up however they screw up remakes these days. Here's the problem with that argument: the first movie wasn't anything special. It has horrible costumes and masks, pitiful acting, a dreadful script and a plot that really went nowhere.

The difference between that version and this one is that this movie takes itself far more seriously and has the muscle behind it to look that way. The previous film became a cult hit because it took itself far too seriously for a movie of its low budget. That's the way that a bad movie gets wrapped in the mother's embrace of the movie watching public. By pretending that it had something more going for it than it really did.

But this version DID have more going for it and thusly makes it hard to not look at in anything less than a serious fashion. And if you look at it in a serious fashion you start to see all the problems and not really like the movie all that much.

There are some great costumes and terrific make-up, some killer performances by actors that you can't recognize in the make-up (my faves being Paul Giamatti and Tim Roth) and kickass special effects.

But in the end this is still a movie with a lousy script and a stupid plot. And no amount of director's clout will save it from that.
