Movie Review by Chris August 30th, 2007

Pearl Harbor is a classic tail of romance set during a war that complicates everything. It all starts when childhood friends Rafe and Danny become Army Air Corps pilots and meet Evelyn a Navy nurse. Rafe falls head over heels and next thing you know Evelyn and Rafe are hooking up. Then Rafe volunteers to go fight in Britain and Evelyn and Danny get transfered to Pearl Harbor. And while Rafe is off fighting everything gets completely whack and next thing you know everybody is in the middle of an air raid we now know as "Pearl Harbor".
Pearl Harbor, directed by Micheal Bay, is a bleak attempt at Micheal Bay creating a romance mixed together with the history of Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor was just basically hated by critics because of Micheal adding the romance to the movie. Not to mention stale acting and a sort of boring premise. The one thing the movie was noticed for was the last 45 minutes of the movie. This is where the action scene begins and we get the greatest reenactment of Pearl Harbor ever seen on film. All presented in fabulous Micheal Bay detail.
I have to say that I have never been a big fan of Ben Affleck, (Bad Assfleck). So thinking about Ben being in a romance/action movie, I got worried. This is probably the worst performance of his career. Even though I am not a big fan of him, he deeply dissapointed me. When I watch him playing as Rafe in the movie, I cant help but notice that he just tries to hard to gets the role right. There are moments when the movie feels like a soap more then it does a modern day take on an old story. Josh Hartnett plays as Danny Walker. Josh did a really good job in Black Hawk Down and 30 Days of Night, but here, hes not horrible, hes just not to good. He's not like Ben and tries to hard, he just doesnt try hard enough. There were times when it felt as if he did a great job with the role and everything, but the emotional content of the film didnt fit him too well.
Micheal Bay is really known for creating big action movies. With films like The Island, Transformers and Bad Boys II on his list of films, none were loved to much by the critics. I recently saw the not so great Armageddon where it seemed that Micheal Bay tried to hard to create fun with a serious story. He practically does the same here. I and many critics say that most of the time, he never has a story behind all the action. Now that he finally makes a complex story, the movie failed. I questioned myself alot on this subject and is still questioning myself.
The last 45 minutes of Pearl Harbor are evenly said as the best part of the entire movie. Pearl Harbor, reenacts the events with an amazing detail. Right from the first bomb drop into the water, the audience automatically gets hooked onto all of the explosions and details of the scene. We see many men running for their lives and numrous people trying to fight for their country. There is a certain scene where after all the planes leave, men try to save the drowning people within the flipped ships. This scene hit me the hardest because it shows this graphic reality when people were really desperate about saving these men.
Pearl Harbor is not a good movie, nor is is an absoulutly horrible movie. I just think the actors slacked, the action was great, and the story slacked, but it was 3 hours of just really nothing except for the final 45 minutes.
