Controversy

Pulled from the theaters when its original release date coincided with the school shooting at Colombine, O sat on the shelf for a long time before it was quietly released in the theaters in 2001, only to quickly head to video and DVD.

A retelling of the classic Shakespeare play of Othello, O is directed by Tim Blake Nelson, better known for being that strange looking member of the trio in OH BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? and the lecherous best friend in THE GOOD GIRL. People tend to overlook this fact, I like to bring it up if only to get people to say "Nah, really?"

The movie follows a popular black high school student slash basketball player who is beloved by the school as well as the basketball coach, much to the chagrin of the coach's spoiled rotten son. When the jealousy finally gets the better of him, the bad seed plants rumors in the popular player's head, telling him that his girlfriend's been cheating on him. The chips then fall where they typically may.

The movie is slow paced and boring. It suffers from the lackluster acting turns by Hartnett and Phifer but oddly enough is redeemed slightly by the strength of modern day cinema's Shakespeare girl Stiles.

Powerful for what it tries to do, even if what it's trying to do is vague.
