Boo!
I have to admit, this flick needed to grow on me. I saw it in the theater with my Midget who was barely a year old at that point and not all that interested in sitting still for a movie like she was for sitting in front of the TV. Needless to say, I ended up missing parts of it when I was in the theater.
After it came out on DVD I bought the disc out of a feeling of obligation. I buy pretty much every cartoon movie and Pixar flick that gets released so that I can buy myself a couple of hours when I have something that I need to get done. Midget didn't pick up on it right away either and it stayed in the library for a few months before she asked to watch it one rainy day.
Snuggled up with me on the couch, we sat and watched the movie without interruption. That's when I realized what a sweet and original idea it was. Monsters going through little kids closets to scare them so that they can capture their screams. They want to do that because the screams give their city power and at the time that the movie starts there is a big power outage looming on the horizon.
Even though monsters go into little kids' worlds to scare them, they're also just as deathly afraid of them as is the case vice versa. They don't want to be touched by kids or get any kids germs on them. In fact, there's a whole system for decontamination if that occurs.
One day a little girl escapes from her world into the monster world and becomes attached to one of the most popular workers at the scream factory. Sulley and his sidekick Mike go to extreme lengths to get the little girl they nickname "Boo" back to where she belongs without it getting discovered that they have her.
There is a villain as is the needed case in almost every cartoon flick and he is excellently voiced by Steve Buscemi. In fact, all of the voice roles are so well cast that it's hard to find any fault at all with the "acting." Even the little girl (one of the Pixar team's daughters) who voices Boo is so sweet and realistic that for those of us who have children, we can totally see our kid doing and saying the same exact things.
MONSTERS INC is up there amongst the best animated flicks for both children and adults to watch.

And until recently I hadn't noticed that Nemo makes a cameo appearance in it (two years before his feature), along with Jesse from Pixar's previous Toy Story 2 (whom I did notice the first time around) when Boo goes home .
I like easter eggs :-) |
