Movie Review by Zara
March 12th, 2007

Color me unimpressed

Again, another example of a movie that was supposed to make me feel moved because a beautiful actress decided to get ugly. I never really understood why there was such a draw for that kind of thing. Then again, I don't understand why retarded characters are always considered Oscar worthy either.

The movie is slow and depressing, following a mother who has had some outrageously bad luck in her life. First she loses the father of her child when he is executed in the jail that Billy Bob works at. Then she's trying to walk home with her child and he is hit by a car and killed. That's great fodder for a flick.

Then the really ugly part comes. After Billy Bob's son (and co-worker in the jail) decided to commit suicide, the two of them strangely bound over their mutual grief. Then they have really ugly and disturbing sex that looks somewhat realistic. Um... yeah. One of the most UNSEXY sex scenes I've seen, aside from some of the rape scenes out there.

We as the audience are supposed to feel happy for these two very different people and how they managed to find one another despite all of the sadness in their lives. I just wanted to figure out why Billy Bob still gets so many good looking women to have sex with him, in real life or on celluloid.

I thought Heath Ledger was great in this movie.
