Mmmm... Statham

I first caught this movie about mid-way through when it was airing in the middle of the night on cable. At that point, I'd never seen the original version of the movie that it's modeled after, THE LONGEST YARD, or the remake that was released just last year. Since I'm a sucker for a British accent and hearing one man calling another man a "bloody wanker," in addition to preferring the REAL version of football, I was instantly hooked on this flick.

The story follows Danny "Mean Machine" Meehan, a disgraced footballer who rigged a match between England and Scotland who has now become an alcoholic mess. After leading the cops of a drunken chase and then resisting arrest, he's placed in a high security lock-up. When the corrupt governor asks him to coach his team comprised of the guards, he suggests a match between the guards and the inmates instead. Over the course of the film, he encounters the standard issue conflicts with other prisoners and guards, all leading up to a great match where, well, everything gets wrapped up in a predictable fashion.

I have since seen both versions of the THE LONGEST YARD, and I can safely say that MEAN MACHINE is far superior in being entertaining. There might be those who have trouble following the action if they are unfamiliar with football (what many others refer to as soccer) and/or the thick accents, but the actors make the flick. Vinnie Jones has a great charm to him and his background lends to the authenticity of the flick. Jason Statham is the stellar addition though, in a role defining the character that he would become in future films.
