I am Sam (2001)

Dakota's Big Debut
This film often seems like a TV movie, but at its core it is a heart-warming film about a mentally-handicapped father trying to win the right to continue raising his daughter.
Sean Penn is typically brilliant as Sam. However there is something more here, where Penn is usually weird and understatedly wonderful, here his powerful presence is held in and he very physically transforms.
Michelle Pfeiffer gives her best performance in years as the attorney tying to help him. She is in charge, but also fallible and you fall in love with her over the course of the film.
But more than anything, this is the film that introduced the world to Dakota Fanning. She is arguably the best child actor of all time and she owns this film, completely.
Great soundtrack, good script, fantastic acting.
