Movie Review by Jarrod
August 31st, 2007

I will be frank about 'Gosford Park'. I hate it. I think it is painfully, dreadfully boring. A murder mystery that is structured in many ways like an Agatha Christie novel, it lacks the wit or the intrigue, I think, and the murder itself does not occur until what seems like hours, after we have heard what I think is tedious and insipid dialogue, spoken by characters who have nothing better to do than sit around and talk to one another. We see both the wealthy guests at a party on a country estate, and what goes on in the servants' quarters, and neither is that great.

I love Robert Altman, don't get me wrong, but this is a film I found intolerable. The superb ensemble cast features Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon, Bob Balaban, and other wonderful actors, but even this could not salvage it for me. Maybe I simply could not appreciate the movie's finer subtleties. I was struck by its visual style, which is authentic and beautifully realized, but that's about it. It never grabbed my attention or held my interest. Praised by many as a masterpiece, and they are indeed entitled to their favorable opinions, I find it to be one of Altman's worst. Maybe I do the film a disservice by giving it such a short and bitter review, but so be it. I had more fun watching Clue.
