Movie Review by Jessica Film Junkie
March 11th, 2007

Upper and Lower

Robert Altman's genius film about the lives of those above the basement and those who dwell beneath the floorboards. This lively and complex character murder mystery is one of the most original and best movies in the past decade.

It plays like an Agatha Christie novel, but with better drawn characters and all kids of hidden history we can only guess at. Helen Mirren gives a brilliant performance as the head housekeeper, while Clive Owen keeps us in suspense as the mysterious new worker.

Ryan Phillipe gives the best performance of his life as the Scottish butler, who may have a dirty little secret and Maggie Smith lives up to the name 'Dame' with her b*tchy and fabulous upper class snob.

It would be hard for me to love this movie more. A true classic.
