Knee Deep in Split...

Oh the teen heartbreak movie. I was one of these kids who fell in love with every girl who paid me any sort of attention, so these movies are very close to my heart. Even as an adult, I find myself occasionally longing for the sweet heartbreak of having a friend's friend's girlfirend telling me that my girlfriend was dumping me....and then going home and listening to Scritti Politti or Spandau Ballet until the heartbreak went away...

*sigh*

On with the storyline then...

When Berke Landers (the ever unsmiling Ben Foster) gets dumped by hot chick girlfriend Alison (Melissa Sagemiller) so she can smooch with ex pop-singer and all round cad, 'Striker' (Shane West), he decides to do anything to get back with her, including join the school production of a musical version of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, written and directed by total self-involved clod, Dr. Desmond Oates (Martin Short). Realising he is out of his depth, he enlist's help from his friend Felix's (Colin Hanks) sister, Kelly (Kirsten Dunst)...who he finds is a afr more interesting person than he first thought....

I found this film funny from start to finish, even though it couldn't quite figure out if it was trying to be a National Lampoon movie, a 'nice' teen comedy or a Bizarro-world Shakespeare adapation...actually, it was probably all three. The cast are all likable in their various roles, and Martin Short, who I normally cannot stand, is hilarious as his prime example of 'those who can't...teach'.

A few special mentions have to go to the amazing title sequence, where Berke's depression develops into a dance number, Kirstin Dunst showing she doesn't have a bad singing voice and Dunst again, showing how a 'bouncey' gal can fill a bikini (ooh, was that sexist...sorry!!).

A decent watch for the lovers of teen comedies, but don't expect John Hughes-ian excellence!!

It's a pretty bad mess. But I will admit that Martin Short made me giggle.
