Sad to have a dream you know won't happen.
Favorite movie quote from Enemy at the Gates :
Major König: He isn't dead, and do you know why? Because I haven't killed him yet.
I am very surprised that a history buff has not reviewed this one yet being that almost every character in this film is based on a true person. This is probably the finest sniper film ever made.
I watch this film usually once or twice a year and always forget how much I like it. It is beautifully directed, written and executed. Jude Law and Ed Harris are really wonderful in this film. You think of a sniper and neither of those two actors are the first to come to mind and I think that's one of the reasons that the chemistry worked so well.
It follows the Nazi invasion of Stalingrad. Jude Law is a great shot and quickly becomes Russia's much needed hero after over 100 sniper kills of Nazi military. The Germans need to make an example and kill Russia's moral so they of course think that killing the heroic sniper from the red army will do the job. Ed Harris is the German sniper that goes hunting looking not for deer but Jude Law.
Jude Law which plays the character and real life sniper Vassili Zaitsev, knows deep in his heart that Ed Harris (Major König) is the better man and quickly begins to doubt himself as the hero that he is. At the same time he is falling in love with Tania Chernova (Rachel Weisz) which is a female sniper. The game between Zaitsev and König goes on for months until finally they have their dual.
This film is just all around great. It focuses on showing you more then just the battle of the two snipers. It also depicts a horrifying version of how Russian soldiers were lead into battle to get killed and if they retreated or surrendered then the Russians would murder their own soldiers.
