Donnie Darko (2001)

Donnie Darko - Yum!
the first time i ever saw donnie darko was by chance. i was sat at home with my best friend and her sister and we watched it because nothing else was on, and it completely blew us all away. i've always been a massive fan of psychological, mess-with-your-mind style films, and donnie darko hit all the right notes.
aswell as being truly mind-boggling, it had that ideal combinaton of a perfect love story alongside the thrilling plot which made me melt. everytime i watch it i fall in love with donnie that little bit more; something about him is just so sexy. the film is straight-talking and honest, and it makes a change for it to be so daring. i think that one of the reasons why i like it so much, is that i feel that a lot of people won't really get it in the same way that i do - i feel like it was made for people with my kind of mind.
when i first saw donnie darko, i knew i loved it though a lot of it didn't make sense to me. i read up on it and watched it again a couple of times and things began to fall into place. when it finally made sense (though some of it is still very confusing!) i realised how incredibly intelligent it actually was. the thought process behind it intrigued me, which is one of the things that facsinates me about all good psycological films.
aside from having the dry and often very subtle humour which i adore, donnie darko managed to evoke raw emotion from quite simplistic scenes, and i found myself completely engaged in it, and when that sort of thing happens, i know i have found something special.
the only flaw in donnie darko is the 'scene' label which has become contemporarily attatched to it, which isn't the films fault and is, therefore, forgivable. there is something about it, visually, aurally, and mentally, which is truly beautiful and i think that anyone who actually understood the film would feel moved after watching it. if they didn't, then they probably didn't know what was going on.
