Movie Review by Zara
May 27th, 2007

It takes some time, but it's worth waiting for

The phrase guaranteed to get me going is "character study." I don't know what it is about a movie that doesn't really DO a whole lot of anything, I just know that I prefer getting a chance to get to know a couple of people, listening to their stories and watching their messy realities. I understand that this type of movie isn't for everyone, although I would have to wonder just how few people don't like them considering how many have been made as of recent.

While there are elements at work in this film that I don't like (namely the unnecessarily high level of melodrama) there is still enough that gets fleshed out to make me glad I took a chance on this flick. Made after Stiles had come into the limelight in 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU, I think that this was supposed to be her "adult" flick.

While it doesn't quite hit that note (she still looks far too young to be taken all that seriously and the fake tattoos REALLY don't help) it DOES showcase that she has a level of maturity to her which is unrivaled by the other actresses her age.

However, the real star here is the bewitching Stockard Channing. Made when she was 57 years old, she definitely seems the older woman here yet at the same time possesses an air of timelessness about her. For us younger women, there is a chance to look into her eyes and really fear that moment she talks about, the moment where you wake up as someone else without anyone having asked your permission for that change.

Probably a better movie for women than for men, but still an interesting flick regardless.
