Brotherly Love
Without question the greatest epic covering the events of any war, Band of Brothers, some ten hours detailing the real life exploits of the US Army's 101st airborne (EZ company) from boot through the final days of World War II, is a magnetic take of what it means to be a soldier. Unlike other war films where there is a great deal of creative license (even the excellent Saving Private Ryan), Band of Brothers is more or less a truthful retelling of events – the good and the bad.
Brainchild of Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, Band of Brothers features a laundry list of solid if not spectacular actors including Damien Lewis, Donnie Wahlberg, Ron Livingston, Neal McDonough, Rick Warden, Simon Pegg, Jamie Bamber, Jimmy Fallon, David Schwimmer, Colin Hanks, and more. These actors portray real people, not fictional characters, and they are flawed; some are cruel, cowardly, or stupid while also being brave, intelligent, or lucky.
Brothers is unflinching in its observation of the trials of the war and the hard choices that it required. There are tales of pointless missions, murder amongst our own, friendly-fire accidents, soldiers dealing with shell shock, hard deaths, deaths that seem arbitrary, and it also confronts the execution of surrendered German prisoners, the discovery of the concentration camps, and the reactions of US soldiers and German citizens alike.
Band of Brothers should be required viewing for any person that questions the sacrifices of my grandfather's generation and why anyone that disrespects the soldiers of any country may count themselves among those of whom I do not wish association. You can disrespect the war without disrespecting the warrior. Most of the men and women that serve in the armed services are better people than me. Better than most of you too.
