Magic
Some films come and go. Others are immediately forgettable. Every now and then a movie comes along that can have a profound effect on you, no matter how emotionally grounded you are. For me Amelie was one such film. The Fabulous Destiny of Amelie Poulain, to give it it's correct title, was released in France with a wave of hype and publicity that by and large escaped the rest of the world. Until that is, the rest of the world saw it.
I firmly believe that I could write a hundred thousand words and still be unable to convey the sheer magic of this flick. I think on some levels it will remind you that no matter how brilliant you think you are, one still has so much to learn about the world. At the same time, if you have been paying attention, it will warm and comfort you.
Gushing review so far eh? There are so many reasons why this film just works. The flowing urgency of the narration. The no-nonsense descriptions and explanations. The fact that there is almost fifteen minutes of setting the story up, background and insight. The general cinematography, this film looks magic. The bizarre story. The music....
The real strength here is the characterisation, something that personally I am a big fan of. The supporting roles are bought so vividly to life by the brilliant acting, superb writing and flawless direction. Despite the fantasy, it is all so believable. Of course the main focus is Amelie Poulain, a young woman whose outlook is so innocent and naive I will defy you not to see at least some facet of your own soul in there. One thing this film does is demonstrate to us all that every human has an imagination. Audrey Tautou is fantastic, extremely beautiful and captivating.
At the end of the day this is a love story, but there is no complicated hollywood triangles or obstacles, the complications come from within, and that could possibly be said of all our love lives (well definitely mine). Absent also is the movie sex, which is refreshing. I am not even going to justify myself by writing more. Just watch it.

| I love to stick my hands in bins full of loose stuff, no matter what it is. I remember giggling with delight when watching this film for the first time. |
